Reflections In Genesis- Some Brief Comments on Chapters 1-22

The creation of heaven and earth took place in seven 24-hour days, according to the text. I am unconvinced by all attempts to affirm or deny any particular scientific meaning to the chapter, but I also reject assigning a macro-evolutionary worldview. Such a worldview is more akin to the pagan creation stories circulating in Moses’ day: where the gods made the world through violence and sexual perversion, that were both “amoral.” It was a theology of war, “the survival of the fittest.” The Pentateuch was written to overthrow this worldview.

WHAT DOES PAUL MEAN BY FAITH?

The faith that Paul sketches teaches that we love one another to reflect God’s rule in our Adamic vocation, bringing about the fulfillment of God’s original plan. This is what Christ taught: peacemakers are the children of God, the new Adam and Eve, presiding over and inheriting the creation. (Matthew 5:9) “You are the light of the world:” the light of creation shining through the new Adams into a restored creation. (Matthew 5:14) This is what John taught: Christ comes in a renewal of creation, to push back the darkness, to raise up the new Adam and Eve. (John 1:5, 12)
